Licheng District, Jinan: A Bumper Harvest of Tangwang Chinese Cabbage on the Market
In the boundless fields of Chinese cabbage, farmers are busy harvesting Tangwang Chinese cabbage before the winter chill sets in. Tangwang Chinese cabbage, one of the “Four Gourmet Vegetables of Jinan”, holds a deep place in the memories of the city’s longtime residents during winter storage.
With a planting history of over 500 years and boasting an Agro-product Geographical Indication of China, Tangwang Chinese cabbage has been continuously undergoing supply-side reforms in terms of its germplasm, especially with the ongoing construction of the Tangwang Seed Industry Agglomeration Area in Licheng District.
In 2024, the Institute of Vegetables, Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences continued promoting the “Tangwang Zayou No.1” variety in the Tangwang Sub-district, covering an area of 300 mu (20 hectares). This variety, now in its second year of large-scale promotion, features a yellow core, crispy and sweet taste, high yield, and resistance to pests and diseases. Additionally, the newly promoted variety “Shengxia 01”, which can be marketed early, helps farmers stagger their planting and increase their income.
“In our village, we have planted nearly 20 mu (1.33 hectares) of the new variety, and we expect to yield over 5,000 kilograms per mu (75,000 kilograms per hectare) this year,” said Li Jian, secretary of Cuijiazhuang Village, Tangwang Sub-district, in the Chinese cabbage fields. “The new variety has higher yield and price than the original one, and the promotion of it can help farmers increase their income”.
To enhance the brand image and value of Tangwang Chinese cabbage, Tangwang Sub-district held The Second Chinese Cabbage and Strawberry Harvest Season themed “Enjoy Harvest in Tangwang of Licheng”. The event included selecting skilled Chinese cabbage growers, organizing several renowned chefs to prepare a “Chinese Cabbage Feast”, and signing of contracts between the village and enterprises for direct ordering. These activities aimed to boost the brand image of Tangwang Chinese cabbage.
